PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. (West Georgia Times) — A 16-year-old Paulding County girl died Monday after suffering a medical emergency at home, with her family saying she went into cardiac arrest following several days of flu-like symptoms.

Family members said the teen began feeling ill late last week, experiencing fever, fatigue and body aches consistent with the flu. On Monday, her condition suddenly worsened. Relatives said she became unresponsive, and emergency crews were called to the home.

First responders attempted lifesaving measures before transporting the girl to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, according to her family.

The Paulding County School District confirmed the student’s death in a statement Monday afternoon, offering counseling services to classmates and staff. The district did not release her name, citing the family’s privacy.

Health officials note that while most young people recover from the flu without complications, influenza can in rare cases lead to severe outcomes, including cardiac issues or secondary infections. Medical experts say high fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, confusion or persistent vomiting are warning signs that require immediate medical attention.

The Georgia Department of Public Health has reported elevated flu activity in recent weeks, consistent with seasonal trends. Officials continue to encourage vaccination, handwashing and staying home when sick to help prevent the spread of illness.

Friends and community members took to social media Monday evening to share condolences and memories of the teen, describing her as kind-hearted and full of energy.

Funeral arrangements had not been announced as of Tuesday.
