Douglasville City Offices Relocate to Temporary Headquarters as Construction Begins on New City Hall

Residents conducting business with the City of Douglasville will now find many municipal offices at a new temporary location after city leaders relocated administrative operations to make way for construction of a new City Hall facility in downtown Douglasville.

Beginning Jan. 5, 2026, several city departments moved to 6758 Spring Street, the former Heirway Academy building, where municipal staff will operate while demolition and construction begin on a new City Hall complex.

The move marks the first major step in the city’s long-planned City Hall Reconstruction Project, an initiative aimed at replacing aging municipal buildings and consolidating city operations into a single modern facility.

Why the Move Was Necessary

City officials say the relocation became necessary because Douglasville’s current City Hall and annex buildings—located at 6695 Church Street—are aging and increasingly inadequate for the city’s growing workforce and service demands. Over time, departments have been scattered across multiple retrofitted buildings that were not originally designed for government office use.

Infrastructure concerns have also played a role. City leaders noted that key systems within the existing buildings, including elevators and other core infrastructure, are nearing the end of their service life and require costly maintenance.

After evaluating renovation and expansion options, the city determined that constructing a new facility would be the most cost-effective long-term solution. The new City Hall will be funded entirely through the city’s general fund, meaning officials say it will require no new taxes or tax increases for residents.

Where Residents Can Find City Services Now

During construction, many of the city’s core administrative functions are now housed at the temporary facility on Spring Street. Departments operating there include the City Manager’s Office, Office of the Mayor, City Clerk’s Office, Finance, Human Resources, Community Development, Community Relations, and the Legal Department.

Some operations have been placed at other locations to maintain continuity of services:

  • Engineering and Public Services: Courthouse Square offices at 8845 Courthouse Square West
  • Economic Development and the Main Street program: Douglasville Welcome Center at 12385 Veterans Memorial Highway

Residents can continue accessing many services online, including building permits, sanitation requests and financial transactions, while in-person payments and documents can still be submitted through a secure drop box at the former City Hall entrance.

What the New City Hall Means for Douglasville

The new City Hall is expected to take approximately two years to complete, ultimately bringing most city departments together under one roof and improving access to government services for residents.

City officials say the project will also include improvements to nearby O’Neal Plaza, transforming the downtown gathering space with new green areas, shade trees, seating and lawn space designed for smaller community events and casual gatherings.

When finished, the new building will include modern meeting spaces for City Council, boards and authorities, as well as expanded areas for public engagement and civic events.

Community Impact

For residents and business owners, the relocation means adjusting to temporary service locations while construction progresses. City leaders say the transition will ultimately result in more efficient operations, improved accessibility and a centralized hub for municipal services.

The project is also expected to contribute to the continued revitalization of downtown Douglasville, which has increasingly become a focal point for community events, dining and economic development in recent years.

Until the new facility is completed, city officials say residents can reach departments through the city’s main line at 770-920-3000 or by visiting the temporary offices on Spring Street.
