DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. — Douglasville officials on Monday unanimously approved a $1.5 million public investment to support construction of a mixed-use apartment development at the city’s Town Green, a project leaders say is aimed at bringing new housing and commercial activity to the downtown area.

The Douglasville City Council approved the funding during its Monday meeting, clearing the way for development of a 257-unit apartment complex that will also include about 8,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

City leaders said the project is part of broader efforts to expand housing options while continuing to build out the Town Green district as a destination for residents and visitors. The mixed-use development is expected to place apartments within walking distance of downtown businesses, restaurants and public gathering spaces.

Officials say the public investment is intended to help move the project forward and encourage additional economic development around the Town Green area, which has become a focal point for redevelopment and community events in recent years.

Supporters of the project say the new apartments could help address growing demand for housing in Douglasville as the city and surrounding west Georgia communities continue to grow. The addition of retail and restaurant space is also expected to bring new businesses to the downtown district and increase foot traffic for existing establishments.

City officials noted that the development could create construction jobs during the building phase and potentially add long-term employment opportunities once the commercial spaces open.

The project also represents one of the larger mixed-use residential developments planned near the city’s downtown core. Leaders say adding housing close to shops, restaurants and public spaces could help strengthen the Town Green area as a central hub for the community.

Construction timelines and additional project details are expected to be announced as development moves forward.
